Overview of Standards Based Learning and how it is measured:
In Standards-Based Learning, students are not assessed on assignments that are practiced both in class and at home. As a result, you will not see classwork and homework listed as scores or grades representing their mastery of the standards in PowerSchool. What does go in PowerSchool as a score (4, 3, 2, 1) are the Assessments to determine mastery of the current standard.
We do a variety of assignments in Amplify, Canvas, BrainPop, and other learning tools. These assignments are not given "Points" for turning in, do not represent mastery of a given standard, and do not go in PowerSchool. However, a few of these Amplify or Canvas assignments are anchor/formative assessment assignments or artifacts of mastery that students are given specific feedback on in order to practice and improve their mastery. These anchor/formative assessment assignments are then posted in PowerSchool for parents and students to see.
The goal of ALL assignments is to practice the standard we are working on to achieve mastery. We review the assignments in class so students and the teacher can formatively assess their current level of mastery of a given standard. Students are expected to make revisions and take notes on areas they need more practice on and then review them.
Supporting Standards which include Learning Targets ("I can" statements) are present in the current unit's portfolio located in Canvas. Parents who want to know what they can do to support students' understanding of the Standards can help by focusing on the 2.0 level of the proficiency scale at home with students. Go through the "I can" statements (Learning Targets) asking them to explain what they did in the activity that enables them to be able to know and do the "I can" statement.
You can check their completed activities in Amplify by having them log in and show you or by logging in as them and looking.
Included in the Back to School Night Slideshow, is a slide on how to get a Parent login for Canvas and an overview of the grading process. Canvas is used to do additional extension pieces (Tools) that help students to connect deeper with the Priority or Supporting Standards.
Assignments may be listed as Complete C, Incomplete (I), or Revisions Recommended (RR) in Canvas or Amplify. The purpose of these activities and lessons is to provide opportunities for students to be able to reach proficiency on a Standard and be able to know and do the "I can" statements. Whether they are completing or not completing and taking the time to make revisions to their work will have an influence on their understanding of the Standard. This process provides formal and informal opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding and for teachers to gather information formally and informally in order to identify their proficiency level on a given supporting standard at a level 4, 3, 2, or 1, through assignments completed throughout the unit.
